I am currently reading A New Culture of Learning by, Douglas Thomas and John Seely Brown. I was asked to provide a quote, question, comment, and an epiphany.
Quote:
-(setting) a nine year old boy referring to what he has learned through playing Scratch. Scratch is a game that teaches basic computer programing and design.
"But what he has learned most of all is how to learn from others." (Brown & Thomas, p. 23)
Question:
-How do we teach individual to be humble, and view everyone they interact with as a teacher, or at least someone they can learn from?
Comment:
-In one of the stories the author refers to an individual who taught himself how to computer program and run a successful business doing so. The author stated that first he learned through experiment, second he learned by making mistakes (Brown & Thomas, p. 26) I observe many students who are unwilling to make mistakes or take risks / experiment with their own research and learning. As parents and teachers we need to foster an environment where it is okay to be wrong, and encourage students/children to use the tools they already poses to explore an environment, do research, or provide an answer.
Epiphany:
Change used to occur gradually: The color television was first developed in 1929, and achieved widespread adoption by 1999. Taking the color TV 70 years to work its was into 68% of U.S. households.
Compare that to the internet: in 1997 18% of families had internet access in their homes. In the year 2001 that number jumped to 50% (in 4 years!!!). By 2006 the number of households with internet access was at 65% and by 2008, 73% of households had internet access.
WOW - That is a 55% increase in just 11 years.
Change is no longer occurring gradually.
