Our 20% project is to learn and develop something that we are passionate about. I have thought about researching and learning something related to bikes, but I just think that would be too easy. Already in my spare time when I am not doing home work, work work, helping students, or spending time with my wife and taking care of our amazing little girl Mieka, I am most likely researching something related to bikes. This includes but is not limited to: where a ride might be located, how to fix something, how to build a whole new bike, how to sell one so I can get another, how to convert to tubeless, and what nutrition to use.....
So here is what I am thinking: I recently had a student who was referred for an AT (assistive technology) assessment. Upon conclusion it was determined that he would benefit from using the Echo Smart-Pen. Prior to this meeting I had heard of this pen but never really understood it's full potential. This pen has a small infrared sensor by the ink cartridge that allows it to read small sensors in a specially designed notebook that is required to record the notes. It also has an audio recorder built directly into the pen. After the notes are recorded both the visual and audio notes can be uploaded to a computer and shared.
While in this meeting I was beginning to see the value in this pen immediately for the student, but even more so for all students, and students with learning disabilities (we like to say differences) at our school because we are ALL such very different learners.
A number of my students rate note taking services, and for many other students it is difficult at times to listen to a lecture and takes notes at the same time. In the past this service was intermittent at best, and we would often find a high quality notebook on an as needed basis, instead of proactively providing notes. I am really excited to have received an Echo Smart-Pen to use for the year.
Authentic Questions:
1. How do I upload and share information?
2. How might this empower a student note taker?
3. How might access to these notes help all students?
4. How might access to these notes help students who have a learning difference?
5. How can I collaborate with classroom teachers to effectively use this tool to support all students?
6. How does this thing work?
7. Is annotating notes as effective as taking notes?
8. How can I use in-class audio to support learners, and not overwhelm them?
9. What is the most user friendly platform to present this information (class/personal Haiku Page?)?
10. What am I missing help me out in the comments?
My idea is to have one of my students take notes with the Echo Smart-Pen and at the end of each day we upload them to the a platform that each student has access to. They can use them as a supplementary resource or to catch up on their own note taking. I am even going to encourage many of my students to print and create a notebook with these notes. I should say that all of my students are required to take their own notes to the best of their ability. I do see some teachers questing the process and asking: "how will we do note book checks?" I would encourage them to give credit for such a created notebook. After all are we not in the business of leading students to resources to stimulate continuous questioning and discovery?
I really would love some feedback. What other questions would you ask? PLEASE COMMENT :)
